What fashion editors are buying for fall

It’s time to start thinking about the new trends that will emerge this season. Bombarded by all the new must-haves? Not to worry. Canadian Living style editors Karen Kwinter, editor-at-large, and Jessica Ungerman, assistant fashion editor, narrow down the upcoming  trends to the few staples you must add to your closet this fall.

Q: What is the one thing that you will be able to justify splurging on this fall?
A: One of my annual splurges is a luxe leather handbag that gives anything I wear an instant upgrade. For me, bigger is always better and this fall it’s got to be black!

Q: Where can readers find something similar?
A: Some of the best I have seen are at Roots, and although the prices may seem high (around $295), the quality is great and the styles are classic.

Q: What is your one bargain find for fall?
A: One of the easiest and cheapest items to add to your wardrobe this season is definitely a pair of heathered grey opaque stockings.

Q: What is the one new trend that you can’t quite commit to, and why?
A: Short miniskirts. I already lived through that trend in the '70s and I’ve heard that once you’ve experienced a trend you should pass on it the next time it comes around!

Q: What are the must-have shoes for fall?
A: A lace-up Oxford-style shoe boot with a slightly chunky heel in black or grey.

Q: What are the fall colours that will be added to your closet?
A: My closet is already basic black, but this season I will be adding even more black and I will also be topping up my greys. But I will be spiking up the whole collection with shots of rich, deep jewel tones like fuchsia and cobalt.

Q: What is the one fall accessory you won’t be able to live without?
A: A big, luxe, cosy cashmere scarf. Like my handbag, the bigger, the better.

Q: Where can we find something similar?
A: I have seen some beautiful-looking samples from Banana Republic.

Q: What trend from last fall will not be re-emerging from your closet?
A: Luckily, I really don’t make too many shopping mistakes. You might be surprised to learn that I never buy on impulse and really give each purchase a lot of thought, so most of my purchases get a lot of repeat wearing.

Q: What is the one thing that you will be able to justify splurging on this fall?
A:
A great pair of fitted, wide-leg pants with a menswear fabrication like grey flannel.

Q: Where can readers find something similar?
A:
All the major stores from the Gap to H&M will be carrying similar styles.

Q: What is the one bargain find for fall?
A:
Buying a high-shine patent accessory. An easy way to get in on the trend is through affordable patent shoes or even something as budget-friendly as a patent handbag.

Q: What is the one new trend that you can’t quite commit to?
A:
Fur. Although it was a huge runway trend for fall, I don’t feel comfortable wearing real furs – nor is it within my budget!

Q: What are the must-have shoes for fall?
A:
Oxford-style ankle booties.

Q: What are the fall colours that will be added to your closet?
A: Definitely purple.
It is such a rich, deep hue and I can’t wait to experiment and start adding touches of it to my wardrobe.

Q: What is the one fall accessory you won’t be able to live without?
A:
Hats! Everything from cloches to fedoras to berets – there is a hat for every outfit this season.

Q: Where can we find something similar?
A:
Any store that carries accessories will be showcasing hats for fall, as well as department stores like The Bay, Sears and Holt Renfrew.

Q: What trend from last fall will not be re-emerging from your closet?
A:
There is nothing that I really invested in last year that has not carried forward. However, I can tell you what I did buy last fall that I will be wearing again this season – sweater dresses, oversize cardigans and metallic gold and silver accessories.
