Under $100: Best buys for January
It's definitely winter—but we're not sacrificing style!
Post-holiday and well into winter, it's not always the time we want to spend money on our selves. But, that new year, new you vibe is strong, and style is one of the easiest way to refresh your looks and your life. We're thinking about great winter finds and even thinking ahead to spring by picking up necessary transitional pieces. Here are a few of our favourite under $100 purchases for January.
Round and round
Round crossbody bag, $34, forever21.com.
If you’re going to get one new bag this season, make it round. The shape is gaining ground and getting very popular, especially moving into spring and summer—where wicker is reigning supreme. But, since it’s still winter, we recommend picking up an inexpensive option in a slightly more weather-proof textile. This cream version from Forever 21 will do the trick!
Get your glow
Rituel De Fille Rare Light Luminizer in Ghost Light, $38, thedetoxmarket.com.
The future may look bleak come mid-January but your skin shouldn’t have to suffer the same fate. This lightweight cream from indie and natural makeup brand Ritual de Fille blends flawlessly into skin for a natural glow. The sleek petite compact makes it the perfect product to pop into your purse to help give you light throughout the day.
Ruffled up
Smocked tunic, $50, ae.com.
Feminine blouses in breezy silhouettes are big this season, which is great because they’re incredibly versatile. This black printed blouse can be worn under a suit at work, or, if you’re like me, you’ll wear it with skinny jeans and statement earrings on your next date night.
Inside out
Combined kimono, $46, zara.com.
You know those days that you don’t feel like getting out of bed? How about those days you manage to find the will to roll out of bed but don’t dare get out of your jammies. For those days we have a compromise: Kimono. Try this kimono and tuxedo hybrid with white piping from Zara, it will give you a polished look but will have you feeling extra cozy in the heart of hibernating season.
Wine please
Essie Bordeaux, $9, walmart.ca.
I usually stick to a rotation of black or grey when it comes to my nail colour, but this season I’m varying it just slightly to rock a deep purple-red shade. It’s classy and feminine without being precious and manages to feel just a neutral as my usual monochromatic go-tos. This shade by essie, called Bordeaux, is perfect.
Well heeled
Etiwiel boots, $72.50, aldoshoes.com.
Finding the best ankle boots is essential during the chilly months because they are as genuine a wardrobe staple as a good white shirt. This black and navy pair from Aldo is sleek, sturdy and would work with a casual or slightly more formal get up.
Do denim
Denim skirt, $60, hm.com.
If you’re already thinking about spring style, this is a great piece that will take you from the polar vortex to warmer temperatures. The denim is a bit heavier, making it great to wear with knee-high boots and a cozy knit this month, but it will go just as well with strappy sandals and a t-shirt come spring. This is how you do a grown-up and classy denim skirt—with a super flattering paper bag waist, a darker wash and a longer hemline.
Major repair
Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume, $40, bioderma.com.
It’s not enough to use a moisturizer that simply sits on top of the skin. The best creams repair the outermost layer of the epidermis and help hold moisture in. In the depths of winter it’s not uncommon for many to experience dry patches and for those with eczema the struggle is REAL! Turn to Bioderma Atoderm Baume. This non-greasy balm soaks in like a lotion while breaking and soothingthe vicious cycle of itchy irritationn. It nourishes skin while repairing the skin’s barrier for a lasting effect.
Ear piece
Circle-backed ball earrings, $25.50, jcrew.com.
If you read our fashion predictions for 2018, you know that we think hoop earrings—in many different forms—are going to be huge this year. If you’re not ready to take the plunge and pick up oversized earrings, these small and delicate hoops will do the trick too. The ear-jacket style adds interest, without being overwhelming.
Moisture lock
Dr. Roebuck’s Pure, $54, beautyboutique.ca.
When the weather gets really cold and dry—like it has been across Canada lately—I rely on Dr. Roebuck’s Pure moisturizer at night. It’s a thick cream that goes on almost opaque until you rub it in and let it absorb. It’s great for layering over more active ingredients like retinol and vitamin C because its super moisturizing and locks everything in. I’ll be grabbing another jar ASAP.
Pom pom wow
Pom-pom turtleneck sweater, $70, chicwish.com.
Who says a turtleneck can’t be statement-making, this pom-pom incrusted style with a cropped hem has endless styling potential.
