The best sea-salt sprays for resort-worthy waves
Iconic summer hair is loose, wavy and ever so slightly dishevelled. In other words, beach hair. The best way to achieve this texturized ’do is with a dip in the ocean, but for many of us landlocked Canadians, that option is off the table. The next best thing is adding waves using “beach in a bottle”: sea-salt spray.
No surprise, the liquid styler contains salt to activate texture. The most commonly used variety is Epsom salts—it’s less harsh than sea salt. Other ingredients such as essential oils and botanicals are added to help condition, combating the crunchy result sometimes associated with texturizers.
How to use
First rule for using salt spray: Give it a solid shake. Spritz product on damp hair, starting from the roots and moving down the hair shaft. “The follicles need a kick for volume,” says Brian Phillips, founder and CEO of World hair and skin care. Mist the rest of the hair, then let it air-dry or use a diffuser. “If you have time to diffuse the hair, the heat will help support the waves,” says Phillips.
The eco-conscious choice
It doesn’t get much cleaner than this salt spray: no sulphates, phthalates, fragrance or colour. It’s also free of fillers such as palm oil and gluten. To counterbalance salt’s drying effects, the spray contains essential oils and hydrosols (hydrosols are like essential oils but far less concentrated). “I wanted to added more elasticity to the finish of the product,” says Phillips, “so that’s why we added the hydrosols and essentials oils. It balances out the drying effects of the salt.”

The gold standard in salt sprays is Bumble and bumble Surf Spray. It came on the scene in 2001 and is famed for bestowing thin, lifeless strands with bouncy waves and major volume.
