The easiest way to add a twinkle to your eye is with a shimmering metallic shadow, which adds dimension and drama when lids catch the light. Keep in mind that when it comes to sparkle, pick one feature to highlight. If you’re going with glittery eyes, keep your complexion and lips shimmer-free. And to keep this look softly romantic, nix Technicolor hues in favour of earthy metallic shades.

Glitter Versus Shimmer
The difference between glitter and shimmer is one of texture and size. Glitter tends to have larger sparkly pieces, which can offer a bit of a 3D effect, whereas shimmery finishes have smaller sparkly particles that have more of a velvety
texture. If shimmer is velvet, then glitter is sequins.

Grace Lee, lead artist for Maybelline New York, shares her tips for embracing shimmer and shine—especially if you’re wary of the trend. Her own ethos?
“I’m all for it—as long as it’s in moderation.”
The Right Look: “Make the shimmer almost like a fairy dusting of product,” says Lee. Piling it on is opaque and too severe; instead, keep it sheer and build if you need to.

The Right Application: “You want to make the glitter application the final step of your eyes,” says Lee. You may even want to apply your foundation after so that you can brush away any shimmery fallout easily. Lee recommends doing this with a clean spoolie brush.

The Right Multitasker: For an even subtler, but still very modern, take on sparkle, switch up the placement. “Use it as eyeliner, or even a highlight in the inner corner of the eye,” suggests Lee.
