Beauty trends from 2017—that are going to be even bigger in 2018

Keep an eye on these 10 beauty trends that gained ground last year—but are going to be the biggest beauty trends of 2018.

A trend by its very nature isn’t meant to last. They aren’t the red lipsticks or black liners of the beauty world (which are, of course, classics). But some trends have more longevity than others. And that’s what this list is about. These are the beauty trends that have been growing in popularity the last year (in some cases, the last few years), but we predict they’ll be even bigger in 2018. So, if you’re looking for a new beauty look or want to experiment with something more de jour than timeless, this is the list you want to read. From pin-straight hair to glitter, at-home tools to probiotics, these beauty trends are about to blow up—if they haven’t already.

The return of lip gloss

Gloss

The return of lip gloss after years of matte, pigmented lips is a welcome reprieve for those of us who prefer moisture and shine on our kissers. While matte lipstick isn’t going anywhere (in fact formulas are getting better at not drying out our lips—hooray!) expect to see gloss making a big comeback. Wear a clear gloss over your favourite shade of lipstick—we especially love the look of a glossy red right now—or pick a tinted gloss for a youthful, juicy pout.

At-home facial massage tools

null

Massage Tools

At-home facial tools are becoming more and more popular as we aim to give ourselves that spa experience when we can’t make it to a facialist. Think jade rollers, dry brushes and massage heads. As more and more brands hop on board, these devices will only become more affordable—meaning you get to reap the benefits of daily or weekly massage (including improved circulation, elasticity and tightening and promotion of lymphatic drainage) without shelling out big bucks on the regular.

Frequent, and targeted masking

null

Masking

Masking is not a new beauty trend—but it is one that just keeps getting stronger and more accessible. Expect to see more targeted masking treatments and buzzy ingredients to take over. Keep an eye out for charcoal, green tea and anything with extreme hydration. As these beauty balms and soothers get more accessible (price-wise, and in your local drug store) you can add them to your routine much more frequently and tailor your beauty regime to what your skin needs right now. Looking a little tired? Get a mask that exfoliates and brightens. Want to combat that pesky adult acne breakout? There’s a clay mask for that! 2018 is all about perfecting your beauty canvas and masks are the way to do it.

Pin-straight hair

Pin straight hair

If there is an antidote to the overly-touselled bed-head that has dominated the past couple of years, it’s a return to stick-straight and long locks. Think Cher, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While this look doesn’t come naturally to everyone, it isn’t too complicated to achieve for most. Stock up on some anti-frizz cream and a solid hair straightener—and remember this look takes time for anyone with waves, curls or kinks. The good news is the longevity of this look is easily extended thanks to smoothing cream and dry shampoo. The result is a look that straddles the space between dramatic and simple, making it a must for pretty much anyone.

Light treatments

null

Light Treatments

While light treatments for the skin have been part of your dermatologist’s office for years, it’s only recently that you’ve been able to take the technology home. Neutrogena released a light mask earlier in 2017 that targets acne thanks to blue light (which combats TK) and red light (which combats TK). Now, for a more targeted anti-aging approach, you can pick up the DRx SpectraLite EyeCare Pro device from Dr. Gross specifically for the eye area. Expect to see more at-home light therapy devices in the future—this technology is just taking off.

Glitter, shimmer and sparkle

null

Sparkle

This year sparkle and shimmer began to move outside of the eye zone where it usually hangs out and made appearances on our cheekbones and lips too. While many lean towards a heavy hand when applying glitter (especially the younger, Instagram-loving set), you can wear this trend in a more subtle way. If you’re a newbie stick to shades you’re already familiar with and like (like bronze-y shades on your lids or reddish shades on your lips), apply sparingly and stick to a more simple makeup look when completing your look. Going for a sparkly red lip? Keep your eyes simple with a swipe of mascara. Looking to make those eyes sparkle—literally? A touch of blush and gloss is all you need to complete the look!

Microblading in the name of bold brows

null

Bold brows

Bold, natural-looking brows aren’t going anywhere! You can expect brow products like pomades, mascaras and pencils to get even better, but you’ll also probably see microblading (the technique that deposits ink in small hair-like strokes for a semi-permanent brow) become even more popular and better done thanks to technicians honing their craft. Read up on exactly what microblading is here, or read about our editor’s experience getting microblading done herself, here.

Mists and sprays

Mists and sprays

If you don’t have a facial mist at your work desk, on your dresser and in your purse, you should probably pick up a few, stat. Facial mists are great for adding a dose of hydrating skin care throughout the day—without messing up your makeup. While you can go super simple (Caudalie Grape Water has just two ingredients and is super hydrating) you can also pick up options that target specific issues (redness, shine, dullness) and that can be applied before or after makeup as well as throughout the day to really make the most of the product. The good news is, that while some sprays do come with a price tag, many are affordable and most brands now have one to offer.

Golden and warm highlighter

null

Golden highlighter

Highlighter has become the go-to way to add light and definition to your face. The good news is that this technique is great for all skin types and ages and doesn’t look as severe as it’s shadowy counterpart, contouring. But, this season highlighter is warming up to new shades that lean golden and yellow. Just take a look at the success of Rihana’s Fenty Beauty Trophy Wife Freestyle Highlighter—it’s a shade of gold we would have balked at just a year ago. Warmer shades are a little harder for alabaster-toned complexions to pull off, so you may want to stay closer to pink and rose gold shades if you’re just getting into the trend. Olive and darker complexions—these shades are made for you!

Probiotics

null

Probiotics

It’s not news that the gut—also called the second brain—is important when it comes to keeping your body healthy. But the bacteria in your gut is also connected to the health of your skin. Probiotic supplements are meant to be an extra dose of the good bacteria that already exists in your gut. They support digestive health and help to decrease inflammation, but there’s also evidence to suggest that they can help improve your skin—including conditions like acne and eczema. While eating fermented foods like kimchi and kombucha and probiotic rich foods like yogurt are great, they often are not enough to reap the benefits of a healthy, good-bacteria rich gut, which is why more and more people are taking supplements.
