A day in the life of a CL fashion & beauty assistant
7:00 - My alarm goes off, but I press snooze and snuggle in deeper with my pup. My boyfriend, who is currently working in the makeup effects department for the next
Guillermo del Toro film, kisses me goodbye and heads to work.
7:30 - I press snooze again.
7:50 - I race out of bed, throw on my clothes and push the chair that my dog has destroyed into the bedroom so he can't get at it while I'm gone. I take him for his morning walk. It's freezing out and he is being extremely difficult. He looks cute in his new coat from
My Pet Boutique, though!
8:30 -
I apply my eye makeup on the subway. I'm already wearing petal pink Chanel lipstick and rosy cream Make Up For Ever blush.
9:15 - I answer a few quick emails before getting a phone call from our receptionist, Robin. She lets me know that the PR for Darphin are waiting for me in the lobby.
9:30 - I learn all about Darphin's upcoming April 2014 launch, including the massage techniques for applying the new anti-aging cream. In my bag of samples, there's also a sweet treat: silver foil–covered macarons from Ladurée.
10:15 - I write a few blogposts. Be sure to follow the
Style Desk Blog. There are new posts every weekday! I also plan out new posts for the rest of the month. In the style and beauty department, we see so many new products and clothing collections and attend a lot of events every week, so there's always something to write about.
11:30 - Time for an iced tea from the café downstairs. I skipped breakfast, which is a horrible habit that I need to kick.
11:45 - Our intern, Helena, helps me search for earrings in our beauty and fashion closet. Our home director, Brett, needs them for a decor shoot he's doing next week.
12:00 - I commissioned an article on eczema and how to treat it from a former intern, Sarah. Once I edit a freelance piece like that, it needs to be built in our back end. It can take me anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours to build a piece, depending on the size and format.
12:45 - I spend 20 minutes sorting through dozens of interview recorders that I have on my hand-held recorder. I've racked up quotes from makeup artists, hairstylists, research and development directors and
George Strombo. It's time to delete a few files.
1:15 - I walk down to the subway station for the long-ish trek downtown. We're located in North Toronto, so it can be a bit of a journey to get to events during the day. I don't mind, though. I like people watching, playing Sudoku on my phone or catching up on the latest issues of my favourite magazines (including
Harper's Bazaar,
Marie Claire and
Elle Canada).
2:00 - Afternoon tea at the Ritz Carlton Hotel with John Freida. While snacking on appies and desserts, we learn about the new hair innovations for 2014 for colour, styling and care.
4:00 - Now it's time to learn about L'Oréal Paris' new launches for next year. The event takes place on the second floor of Sassafrazz in Yorkville and boasts a hot chocolate bar with four kinds of whipped cream (cinnamon! orange!) and toppings such as toffee-coated bacon.
6:00 - Dinner at the Trump Hotel with Sephora Canada to learn about Marc Jacob Beauty's additions for end of January (including mousse foundations and concealers with awesome coverage). The room is huge, decorated in black and silver. We chat about tattoos and our pets all through the meal.
8:30 - I find the most amazing Shellys London boots while walking through The Bay on the way to the subway. I want them!!
9:00 - I arrive home (with four bags of beauty products for consideration for upcoming issues of
Canadian Living) and find my new online purchases from Dynamite waiting for me (a tank and cardi). I do an Estée Lauder face mask and Kérastase hair mask in the shower before bed. So it was a fun and busy event-filled day. Not all days are like this. Sometimes I just sit at my desk, but who wants to hear about that, right?
