Our Canada: Peterborough, Ont.

Here are three reasons why I'm proud of my community, Peterborough, Ont.

1. It's a caring, connected community.
The first thing that struck me about Peterborough's culture was the kindness of the people who live here. They take care of one another. They give with their time, talents and treasures and their generosity has touched the lives of many in our city and around the world. This sense of community is often ranked as one of the best things about living in Peterborough. In fact, it has even penetrated Twitter, with Peterborough boasting one of the most cohesive online communities in Canada.

2. Peterborough -- It's a natural fit.

Imagine a city that offers the amenities of a large urban centre, with the look and feel of cottage country living. That's Peterborough. Our green spaces, bodies of water, hiking trails, and leadership in environmental stewardship are major attractions for living, investing and recreating in Peterborough. If you're a creative type looking for a place that will relax and stimulate your imagination, plan a getaway to Peterborough and let the beauty of our natural heritage take care of the rest.

3. It's a city of innovators and solution seekers

Peterborough is great, but our pride does not get in the way of our desire to be better and to do more. Whether it's the cutting edge research of Trent University, or the grassroots initiatives that advocate for social justice, the talented, passionate people of this community are working on local and global solutions every day. These efforts and the fruits of such labour are what make Peterborough relevant and a key contributor to regional and international development.

Peterborough is a city for all seasons, with something to offer everyone.

Start downtown.
Downtown Peterborough is the heart of our community and it embodies the very best of our city. Park your car and take a stroll through our vibrant downtown core. Engage in conversations with locals and take in the historic architecture. This is where you'll find some of our city's most delectable eateries along the Hunter Street Café district, concerts, festivals, boutiques and a snapshot of the diversity that embodies our community.

Peterborough has a proud history of nurturing world-class athletes.
On any given Thursday night, hockey and lacrosse enthusiasts can count on The Peterborough Petes or the Peterborough Lakers to bring together thousands of fans under the Memorial Centre roof.

We have a lot to offer nature lovers.
The Silver Bean is a cafe on the water in the heart of downtown, and in the spring and summer, it is the place to be. Ask them about renting a canoe or a paddle boat and any questions about what's good in Peterborough. For those seeking more solitude, our trails along Jackson Park and the Riverview Zoo are free and awe-inspiring.

History buffs will enjoy the stories, visuals and heritage displayed at our National Canoe Museum, Art Gallery of Peterborough, The Peterborough Museum and the Lift locks.

Whether you're visiting with family, colleagues or in your own company, be sure to experience our rich arts and cultural scene. This is one of the reasons we enjoy such a high quality of life here. On any given night, live music fills downtown pubs, bars and restaurants. Plays, musicals, film festivals and concerts with great talent will be on at venues like Showplace and The Market Hall. Don't leave Peterborough without experiencing this.

The food options in Peterborough will surely leave you satiated.

Over the past decade or so, people from different corners of the world have made Peterborough their home. Their presence has not only stimulated our economy, but it has also brought a wide range of delicious cuisines from around the globe.

If your taste buds are tickling, check out the menu at The Only Café -- it's extensive and everything on it is affordable, too. Looking for delicious brunch options? You can't go wrong with a visit to Black Honey or The Planet Bakery. Other options include butter chicken at Karma's Café or Japanese fare at Matsu Sushi. And don't leave Peterborough without stopping for a pint (or two) at Ashburnham Ale House in East City!

Peterborough boasts a National Canoe Museum and claims to have some of the best hiking trails in Ontario. Think your community can top this?
