Four Ways to Manage Cat Allergens at Home This Winter
With the winter season just around the corner, and the Coronavirus keeping millions of Canadians confined to their homes, we’re in for a few months of very close quarters with our pets. This can deepen your bond with your furry friend but can also create problems for pets and humans alike. For cat owners in particular, who have sensitivities to cat allergens, this can create some challenges.
Here are some four ways for pet parents who are looking to manage their cat allergens at home:
1. Make a weekly wash part of your routine
If your cat has free reign of your home, including your bedroom, try to make a habit of washing bedding and blankets weekly to remove allergens. Don’t forget to use hot water!
2. Try a new diet
When cats groom themselves, the major cat allergen called Fel d 1 is transferred to the hair and skin through saliva. The allergen eventually lands in the environment as the cat’s hair and dander shed naturally.
Available in Canada as of October, Purina® Pro Plan® LiveClear™ is the first and only cat food that reduces the allergens in cat hair and dander. Instead of trying to manage the allergen once it’s already in the environment, the allergen is neutralized at its source in the cat’s mouth. When cats eat the food, the key ingredient – a specific protein sourced from eggs – binds to Fel d 1 and safely neutralizes it. In a published study, the food was shown to reduce the allergens in cat hair and dander by an average of 47%, starting in the third week of daily feeding.
3. Vacuum and dust regularly
Your best buddy after your cat should be your vacuum. Try to vacuum the carpet at least twice a week and make sure to focus on spaces where cats lay and play frequently, including on the carpet and below and on the furniture itself. Investing in a quality vacuum and committing to frequent use can go a long way to combat the allergen hot spots you never knew you had!
4. Regularly groom your cat
A regular brush or groom can go a long way, particularly for pets who are prone to matted hair. The act of grooming reduces loose hair, which reduces the overall allergen load. Purr-fect!
By combining these allergen management strategies, cat owners can better handle their current situations and be closer together with the cats they love!
