Your best asset? Hands-down, a beating heart!

A heart is a big deal – frankly, it’s my favourite organ. Pumping blood through my veins, it keeps me alive. I used to take this tremendous feat for granted. But not since I had a heart attack. It was the craziest thing. I was having horrible indigestion, and I was short of breath. My doctor was on it, referring me to specialists, who started all kinds of testing. But in the meantime, she also ran a simple blood test, that apparently told her I had suffered a minor heart attack. I was lucky. I had angioplasty and they got me into Toronto Rehab, an amazing cardiac rehabilitation program. Now I've lost 30 pounds, I exercise almost every day, and I'm pretty careful about what I eat. Honestly, I have never felt better! So when I see an invite like this one for The Heart Truth Fashion Show in my inbox, I go. It was a fabulous event - a fun night with lots of great personalities showing off red Canadian designer dresses to raise awareness for Heart Health. My personal favourites? Jully Black, Divine Brown and  Catriona Le May Doan. OK, Jesse Cruikshank was pretty cute, too. They all were, really – they looked fabulous in bright red – hamming it up on the catwalk. Check out the photos! This campaign is raising awareness that heart disease and stroke is the #1 killer of women in Canada, but most of us don't even know it. Heart disease isn’t a “man’s disease.” Women are more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke. But by taking care of themselves and making incremental heart-healthy changes, women can add more years to their life. In fact, women can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke by as much as 80 per cent by making lifestyle changes. Anyway, back to me :) I'm also signing up for Heart & Stroke Big Bike – riding a 30-seat bike around for 20 minutes with a bunch of my coworkers. It sounds so flashy, but that’s a good way to grab attention. I'm stepping outside my comfort zone to raise awareness. Who knows, maybe it will help save a life someday, that would be lovely. Oh, one more thing! This is the best part, I almost forgot! The Heart and Stroke Foundation is giving away a prize pack (over $150 value) to promote their Make Death Wait campaign. Post a comment below and you're automatically entered to win! And please, take good care of your heart and, really, in all matters of the heart.
