Weston's journey: introduction to solid food

6 months March 067 Sometimes a baby's transition from breast milk to solid food doesn't go as smoothly as mommy hopes. New mom Ashley Mendes pen's a journal entry into Weston's baby book about his introduction to solid food. My dear Weston: I was excited on the day you started solid food. I gave you rice cereal. You were eager to grab the spoon and feed yourself. You didn't cry. You didn't spit it up. You did ok. It was a successful first day. Afterward however, things became a little more challenging. You would cry as soon as I sat you in your high chair. You refused each new food item. Butternut squash, green beans, kidney beans. It didn't matter. You hated them all. You would push the spoon away, shut your mouth, turn away and cry. If I did manage to get some food in, you would spit it out or cough it out. I thought you would love eating and trying new foods. I was certain this experience would be both fun and entertaining for us both. I started to worry that you weren't getting enough nutrition, that you would be delayed in learning how to eat and that you would be on breast milk forever! Then one day when I was eating a banana, you reached for it and seemed to really enjoy it. It wasn't pureed. Maybe that was the thing. You liked feeding yourself so I started dipping the rice cereal in the banana and you would eat it! Then I bought a mixed fruit and vegetable squeezable food pouch. You ate half of it in one sitting. The most you've ever eaten at once. So mommy ordered some pouches from Amazon so I can make my own baby food for you. You've been eating pureed fruit and really like it...as long as I let you grab the spoon and feed yourself. A lot of  trial and error but your intake of solids has certainly improved. You definitely know what you like and what you don't like. Fair enough! I'm looking forward to the day you are able to eat finger foods. I know you'll have no issues with that as you've proven that you love to be able to do it yourself. Love Mommy Did your baby's introduction to solid food go as smoothly as you anticipated?
