Travel Talk: Get the best cruise deal!

The secret to booking an affordable all-inclusive cruise Cruising is an ever-growing choice for Canadian vacationers. No longer the domain of the well-heeled traveller, cruises are now much more accessible (especially in terms of cost) than ever before. Deals abound on cruise packages that promise you idyllic sailing adventures through the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska, even Antarctica.

A common complaint, however, especially from first-time cruisers, is the confusing definition of 'all inclusive.'  As one of my neighbours whinged to me after a Christmas-time cruise to Hawaii, "How can it be called 'all-inclusive' when I had to pay for my soft drink?" Surprise charges, unexpected fees on your bill. These can sour a holiday. But you can prepare yourself. Extra charges differ according to the ship you're on, and the holiday package you've booked. Sure, coffee may be included when served at your table at breakfast, but what if you fancy a late-night tea delivered to your room? And then there are basic shore excursions. Perhaps you assume such outings are part of the all-inclusive package but you're shocked to see a $180 tab on your end-of-sail invoice? That's where you need to be careful. Know what's included, what's not, and then make a decision before you rack up too many extra charges.
