Rollerskating to Church on Christmas?
Four things Venezuelans do a little differently at Christmas
Travellers to
Venezuela at Christmas can expect their fare share of traditional Latin American holiday trappings: large meals, music, church services, nativity scenes, choirs...but in Caracas, the capital, they do things a little differently:
they roller-blade to church!
Four things Venezuelans do a little differently at Christmas:
1. Instead of traditional carolling, you'll hear
drum rolls to announce the birth of Jesus.
2. There will be candles – but
fireworks are part of the tradition, too.
3. Friends tell me it is customary for Venezuelans, even if they're not ardent church-goers, to attend about
nine carol services throughout the advent season. 4. And after the traditional church service, you sit down to
coffee and tostados! What curious or surprising holiday traditions have you discovered on your travels?
