Legendary movie star Peter O’Toole—best known for playing the title character in Lawrence of Arabia—passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Sadly, he never did receive his long-sought Oscar. Nominated a staggering eight times for Best Actor, he was the most jilted Oscar nominee of all time. A few years ago, at the age of 70, he tried to turn down an honorary Oscar, claiming he wasn’t done yet and "might still win the lovely bugger outright." Luckily, he changed his mind and showed up to the ceremony anyway. Accepting his award from Meryl Streep, he said, “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride my foot! I have my very own Oscar now to be with me ’til death do us part.” O’Toole was just as well known for his drinking and carousing as for his acting, but he never let it overshadow his work. He nabbed his eighth and last Oscar nomination in 2007, for his performance as an aging actor living with an ill-behaved niece in Venus. (He lost to Forest Whitaker, who played Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.) He is survived by his two daughters, Pat and Kate O’Toole, from his marriage to actress Sian Phillips, and his son, Lorcan O’Toole, from a subsequent relationship with model Karen Brown.
