Mommy wars: Mila Kunis says she's doing it "right" by having a natural birth

Actress Mila Kunis, smilling Last week, Mila Kunis revealed she was going to have a natural birth. She told talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres, that  “I did this to myself, I might as well just do it right." Cue the backlash. I find it very strange when celebrities reveal how they're going to give birth. I'm not sure what the purpose of it is. Are we all supposed to follow suit and have natural births like it's the latest trendy thing to do? I've been known to copy a celebrity's hairstyle or listen to their beauty advice, but I think it's ridiculous to have a natural childbirth just because a celebrity did. I think what type of childbirth you have is a deeply personal choice that should be made with a doctor or midwife's consultation. You should do it based on what you think you can handle, not what a celebrity says is the "right" thing to do. I actually really like Mila Kunis, but was extremely disappointed that she made such an uneducated comment. There is no right way to give birth, however you choose to do so is the right choice for you. Full disclosure, I am terrified of child birth and think any mom who gives birth, whether it be naturally, with an epidural or by c-section, is an amazing warrior. I think celebrities need to stop revealing how they give birth. It only sparks more mommy wars and comments like these: Did you hear Angelina Jolie had a c-section, isn't she such a bad mom for doing that? Or, Mayim Bialik had a homebirth, isn't that so irresponsible of her. NO! Remarks like these are not okay. However you chose to give birth is your choice and no one should criticize you for that. Unfortunately, when celebrities reveal how they gave birth it only encourages comments like the ones above. So, instead I think celebrities should keep their birthing choices private. That way childbirth remains a private matter and doesn't become a celebrity trend. Yes, I realize that celebrities talking about their birthing choices makes them an advocate, like Ricki Lake with her documentary, The Business of Being Born. Unfortunately, a five minute segment on a talk show isn't really the right venue to have an educated discussion on the benefits of a natural birth. So maybe celebrities could avoid talking about their birthing choice in two-minute sound bites. It only sparks backlash and more misinformation about childbirth options. And that's exactly what we don't need. The only way the mommy wars can end is if we all can have educated discussions and that will never happen if we call one way of giving birth the "right" way.
