So the news broke over the weekend that Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, i.e. Will and Kate, have chosen friends from university to be Prince George's godparents. While most of us don't have to chose between royal family and university friends when selecting godparents or guardians for our kids, the decision about who to name as either can be a really fraught one. In my husband's and my case, we did not go for any of our siblings, which definitely kept me up at night.  In the end we were lucky enough to have so many good choices within our extended family that we were able to look at other factors like geography and similar family styles. In talking to my friends about who they've chosen as legal guardians for their kids in case of their deaths, it's been interesting to hear how hard a decision it can be and what a wide variety of choices people make. If I had to hazard an unscientific guess, I'd say that Will and Kate's decision to choose friends over family is increasingly common. I think in an era of instant communication and with increasing respect for non-traditional family structures, lots of people see the people closest to them as those who share their views and not those who are related by blood.
