Almost 28 years have gone by since the day my husband and I married. And it was shortly after our wedding day when I came to the realization that my husband was a hankie user. I thought it a bit of an oddity in the beginning as I had never used hankies in my childhood. I had been a long-time tissue user accustomed to reaching for a tissue from a box that was perched on top of the toilet tank.For many years I accepted my husband's hankie usage and faithfully laundered and hung out the hankies on the clothesline to dry, while I continued to reach for that old familiar tissue. Until one day, it suddenly dawned on me that this hankie thing might actually be good for the environment as it would save all those millions of tissues from going into the landfill, not to mention the trees that would be saved. And not buying tissues would be a savings in our grocery bill, too! That was more than enough to convince me to give hankies a try, and before I knew it I was hooked on hankies too! I tried to pass my newfound hankie habit on to the kids but was only able to convince one out of the three to use them and then at that my youngest son's hankie usage was limited to the home. After all, it just wasn't cool to take hankies to school, you know. Over the years our family also adopted the use of cloth napkins at the dinner table with the exception of when we had a large number of guests and then paper napkins remained the old standby. For the past several years, I have continued to remain a faithful supporter and user of hankies, even though now and again I find myself reaching for that old familiar lonely tissue box, which I place in my bathroom solely for guests, of course!
