Frosty yet friendly Frankfurt: Embracing winter! Helmut, a worldly but otherwise cranky superintendent in a building I lived in years ago, would come to life whenever he talked about his homeland of Germany, especially his native city of Frankfurt.  Once, after I stomped into the lobby of my building, muttering loudly about the cold, he snorted (audibly), rolled his eyes, and declared, "You need to be a little more German." "Explain," I said, through chattering teeth. I had noticed Helmut never wore anything more than a light windbreaker during the winter, and never a toque ("I don't wear what I can't spell," he once quipped.) I had to know his secret to embracing the cold. So, herewith, my pal Helmut's advice, based on winters in Munich: 1. Embrace the snow: This is English Garden in Munich, draped with snow.   2. Go out at night – even when it's cold : Nighttime skating is popular in downtown Munich 3. Eat good grub. Go Bavarian! 4. Share a pint with a friend.
