[/caption] BC blueberry growers are happy to have a
good crop this year, thanks to lots of sunshine. At a BC Blueberries event this past Tuesday, I learned that there have actually been 32 consecutive days of sunshine in Vancouver. Unheard of! At this delectable event, several innovative blueberry dishes were created at
Calgary's Model Milk restaurant including a crave-inducing pan-baked foccaccia bread, fresh ahi tuna, foie gras--all laced in blueberries. And then, there was the blueberry cobbler. YUM. Eating aside, we also heard from dietician Kristyn Hall, MSc, RD, about the importance of fresh foods like blueberries to our health because food is essentially medicine. It's no news that blueberries are good for us as a good source of fibre and vitamin C, but they can also prevent and actually reverse some forms of age-related memory loss. They can also contribute to lower blood pressure and improved insulin response. As well, Hall talked about how food fuels families, and how eating meals together is critical. She cited the following: -In the school-aged and adolescent population, we see that those kids who eat with a parent/caregiver eat more vegetables, fruit, dairy; they have fewer soft drinks and are at lower risk for being overweight; -Eating together as a family seems to offer protection from eating disorders, especially for girls. May help protect against drug abuse and early sexual activity. -We can see tremendous benefits of eating together, and yet, only half of adults with children say they eat all seven evening meals together. So, just more reasons for families to eat well together. Try out Model Milk's Blueberry Sour for a refreshing drink this summer. Just make it virgin for the kids.
