A green Christmas - and a contest!

This is going to be a big post - complete with a contest!!! Read on for details. With the holidays around the corner, I've decided that on a weekly basis I'll give you some green gift ideas. So, starting today I will pass on some ideas, and continue to do so every Friday until Christmas. Can you believe we're just a month away? Today's theme is books! This is one of my personal favourites. Adria Vasil's Ecoholic (Random House Canada, 2007) is a great reference guide for those who want to green every or any part of their lives. Vasil does all the research on going green for you and offers practical tips on making the planet a better place to live. If you want to green your wardrobe, she gives you plenty of shopping options; if you want your baby to have a green nursery, she'll tell you how to do it. This book is great for anyone with a general interest in going green. Want to buy this for someone on your list? Do it here! Another great green guide is National Geographic's Green Guide (National Geographic Society, 2008). This puppy, not unlike the book above, helps you make smarter choices for your family (and, of course, the planet). This book offers plenty of advice on greening every aspect of your day-to-day life. I just finished reading a passage about greener Christmas trees - inspiring me to get a live, potted tree that I can move outside once the holidays come to an end. You can purchase this guide here Taras Grescoe's Bottomfeerder (Harpercollins Canada, 2008) truly is a gripping read – I couldn't put it down. It's about a foodies journey through the world of seafood. Grescoe takes you to many places and many restaurants and talks about mouthwatering seafood dishes. However, on his journey, Grescoe makes shocking discoveries about the fish we eat and where they come from. This is a great gift for any foodie or eco buff. You can purchase it here. Last, and certainly not least, is Jill Lambert's A Good Catch (Greystone Books, 2008). This book, hot of the press, is a guide on how to choose properly when shopping for seafood. With concern over the amount of seafood our ocean's can produce, endangered species, and fish that are inhumanely caught, it's important that eating sustainable seafood becomes a priority. This book helps to explain why, what the most responsible choices are, what sort of questions to ask at your local fish market and how to cook all sorts of seafood. Lambert's book includes 70 recipes from celebrity chefs across Canada. I blogged about this book here, so you can read more about it if you'd like. If you're interested in purchasing this book, you can do so here. It's a perfect gift for an environmentally-conscience friend, as well as someone who loves to cook Now, here comes the fun part. In order to make your holiday shopping a little easier, I'm giving away three copies of Lambert's A Good Catch over the next three weeks. All you have to do is sign up to have the Green Living blog delivered directly to your e-mail inbox. To do so, click on the word e-mail under the icon at the top left side of this page (it looks like this ). I'll pick one winner a week for the next three weeks. Good luck!
