Let yourself get captivated by Miriam Toews latest novel "Women Talking"
Eight women who share the same trauma in a Mennonite community come together to share their stories of grief, sorrow and joy.
It's a simple premise: After a shared trauma, the women in a traditional Mennonite community secretly gather to plan the best course of action for their future. One trusted man is present to record their discussion, which is, by turns, shocking, funny, moving, enraging and, ultimately, life-changing.
Perhaps the most powerful part of Toews' novel is that, as we hear each unique voice, we're reminded that a woman speaking and making decisions for herself is, even in this modern world, a revolutionary act.
Women Talking (Knopf Canada) By Miriam Toews, $30.
