Kids' crafts: Easy to make scrapbooks

Summer celebrations such as graduations, weddings, baby showers, retirements and birthday parties are a perfect excuse to break out the scissors and glue. After all, what better way to preserve good memories than with a carefully crafted scrapbook page?
We asked Jackie Ludlage, the editor-in-chief of Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine, to create two scrapbook layouts to inspire your own memory-keeping projects.
Jackie used widely available scrapbooking supplies, but if you'd prefer to DIY, use these layouts and materials lists as guidelines, then get busy and experiment with different paper, stickers or special treasures from your craft supply drawer.
Happy birthday scrapbook layout
Documenting a birthday celebration is a great idea. This layout documents a Viking-themed birthday party, but you can change the colour scheme and embellished details to personalize this layout according to the tastes of the birthday boy or girl.
Take a look at a larger picture of the finished birthday scrapbook.
You need:
• Two sheets scrapbooking paper or card stock, 30.5 cm (12 inches) square, one each black and white
• Patterned paper and coordinating stickers (we used Jillibean Soup)
• Ruler
• Scissors or craft knife
• Scrapbook adhesives (foam squares and tape runner)
• Photographs (including at least one 20 x 25 cm/8- x 10-inch photo and at least two 10 x 15 cm/4- x 6-inch photos)
To make:
1. Trim 1 cm (1/2 inch) from each edge of white card stock; centre on black card stock and adhere.
2. Cut strip of blue-patterned paper and adhere down centre of layout.
3. Attach green border stickers along both vertical edges of central paper panel, as shown.
4. Trim large photo to remove background, creating a silhouette. Adhere to the layout (see larger photo above). Adhere remaining small photos as shown.
5. To further document your special occasion, adhere additional photos, mementoes and stickers as desired, referring to layout (see photo) for placement.

School memories scrapbook layout
This double-page layout gives you enough room to feature several highlights – such as concerts or class trips – from your child's school year.
Take a look at a detailed image of the finished school year scrapbook.
You need:
• Photographs
• Thin cardboard
• 2 sheets scrapbooking paper or card stock, each 30.5 cm (12 inches) square (blue polka-dot, or desired pattern)
• Assorted card stock, patterned paper, die cuts and stickers (we used the BoBunny Learning Curve Project Kit)
• Alphabet stickers, such as Adornit Carolee's creations
• Clearsnap ink and/or marker
• Ruler
• Scissors or craft knife
• Scrapbook adhesives (foam squares and tape runner)
To make:
1. Print out one 12 x 18 cm (5- x 7-inch) photograph and three 10 x 15 cm (4- x 6-inch) photographs; adhere to thin cardboard for added dimension and to prevent warping when adhering to layout using foam squares. Ink edges and set aside.
2. Place both 30.5 cm (12-inch) square card-stock sheets on work surface. With glue, adhere a strip of alphabet-patterned paper to top of each sheet.
3. Place clock sticker border along edge of alphabet paper and blue polka-dot paper as shown.
4. Adhere strip of green-patterned paper along bottom of layout.
5. If using BoBunny Learning Curve Project Kit, cover schoolhouse-shaped chipboard with red and yellow polka-dot paper and assemble roof according to kit instructions. Cover square pieces of chipboard with red-patterned paper. Ink edges.
Adhere one schoolhouse piece to either end of layout, just above strip of green-patterned paper. Position square pieces of chipboard, evenly spaced, between two schoolhouses; adhere to layout, creating one long schoolhouse. (Or, cut your own schoolhouse shapes and squares from light card or chipboard, and cover as desired; place on layout as directed above.)
6. Using a sharp pair of scissors or craft knife, cut through middle chipboard square where two pages meet, so pages are no longer attached.
7. Adhere photos created in Step 1 along top of schoolhouse (see larger photo above), using foam squares to add dimension.
8. With scissors or craft knife, trim six 10 x 15 cm group photos along heads, removing skyline in each photo but leaving bottom uncut. Adhere photos to bottom of schoolhouse in chronological order.
9. Using alphabet stickers adhered to page with foam squares, create labels for photos.
10. If using BoBunny Learning Curve Project Kit, create apple die cut according to kit instructions (or create your own apple from light card or chipboard and patterned paper) and adhere to layout, positioning as shown.
11. Embellish layout with clock, bell, library card and yellow photo label die cuts (or substitute your own embellishments as desired).
