How to make a fall-themed felt pincushion
Fall colours felt pincushion
Wool felt comes in dozens of attractive colours, so it's easy to customize this project to your tastes.
The sturdy fabric doesn't fray, so there's no need to finish the edges or hide seams.
You need:
• 30 cm x 20 cm (12- x 8-inch) piece wool felt, for base
• Scraps wool felt, for flowers and leaves
• Embroidery floss
• Wool stuffing, or polyester fiberfill
• Buttons (optional)
• Scrap paper, pencil, compass and ruler
• Scissors
• Pins, needle

How to make a fall-themed felt pincushion
1. Using compass and ruler, draw 9 cm (3 1/2–inch) diameter circle on paper; cut out. Draw 28 x 4 cm (11- x 1 1/2-inch) rectangle; cut out. If desired, draw or trace patterns for leaves, flowers or other embellishments; cut out.
2. Pin paper templates to felt; cut out 2 circles and 1 rectangle. Cut flowers and leaves (or other embellishments, if desired) from scraps of felt; set aside.
3. Fold rectangle in half, matching short edges; pin. Using 2 strands embroidery floss, blanket-stitch short edges together, back-tacking at beginning and end and using 5 mm (1/4-inch) seam allowance, to create ring.
4. Blanket-stitch 1 circle to top of ring, using 2 strands embroidery floss, back-tacking at beginning and end and using 5 mm (1/4-inch) seam allowance. Repeat, backstitching second circle to bottom of ring, and leaving 4 cm gap for stuffing.
5. Stuff firmly, pushing stuffing into corners and edges. Sew up gap.
6. Flowers, leaves or other embellishments in place and sew securely to top of pincushion. Decorate with buttons, if using.
The leaves outside are changing colour from green to beautiful shades of gold. Decorate your table to match with these festive felt leaves.
