Handmade tortilla warmer: a simple Guatemalan craft for everyday use
Hi friends, Over the next few days I'm going to share some of the crafty discoveries that I made while I was off adventuring in Guatemala. In between hiking up volcanoes, exploring bat caves, white-water rafting and zipping down zip lines, my crafty senses were tingling. On Monday we went white-water rafting, then gathered together for a family-style lunch. It was a simple meal: a broth-based vegetable soup, some roasted chicken, and vegetable pilaf, accompanied by hot sauce and freshly made tortillas. Once I'd eaten, I took a second look at the dish that held the tortillas:
Can you tell what it's made of?
It's a squash that had been hollowed out and then dried until it was quite hard. The hole in the top was just big enough to fit the tortillas, but small enough that the warmth stayed in – and the tortillas stayed warm for the whole time we were eating. It was sturdy and lightweight, too. The table cloth that you can see in the background is just one example of the great textiles that are such a part of everyday life in Guatemala. I'll talk about them later this week.
