My husband knows it's been a tough day when he walks in and finds me rearranging shelves or re-labelling dozens of canning jars filled with dry goods. Whenever life hands me a crazy week, full to the brim with obligations and worries, my mind wanders toward organizing. It's what I do to keep chaos at bay. I'm lucky to have a spare bedroom set aside as my craft space. But sometimes larger digs are just an excuse to create higher and deeper piles of stuff. And this stuff never seems to find its way into a closet or drawer – no matter how many of them you have. A few years ago, I stumbled across a copy of Organizing Your Craft Space by Jo Packham. I picked it up, assuming I could get some good ideas for fixing the mess, then pass the book along. What I found inside keeps me coming back to this little volume. The craft spaces in the book are so personal and unique. Each reflects the personality of the crafter – her favourite colours, patterns, motifs, outlook on life – and the personality of the craft she specializes in. Some rooms are eye-poppingly colourful, shelves overflowing with beautiful fabrics. Some are done in quiet earthy tones, with neatly stacked decoupaged boxes of buttons, beads and ribbons. Some of the spaces are converted garages, some bedrooms, some specially built cottages (you can just see the pretty garden and picket fence outside, can't you?). But all are deeply personal and private sanctuaries where an artist comes to be inspired by her personal Muse. A lot of books in this category are packed with great ideas – and a healthy helping of finger wagging. There are lots of before-and-after shots, testimonials on the virtue of tidiness, yadda yadda yadda. This book doesn't overindulge in that and focuses instead on what makes a craft space work for a particular person. It's like learning to appreciate your curves or work with your curls – it's inspiring to discover what works for you and no one else.
