Festive Friday: Film Roundup (or, What to Watch When You're Busy Making Presents)
Hi friends, On Tuesday night, I hit the wall. With just one-third of my gift knitting completed, I had watched every movie in my home. I was completely caught up on all the TV shows I watch and had listened to all the podcasts I could get my ears on. And I've still got 800+ metres of yarn to transform into presents!
It was time for a trip to the video store. (I know, I know, I should get with the times, but I prefer the happy accidents of video store shelf-browsing, which I don't think I'd get if I was choosing from a list online.) After work on Wednesday I spent a good 30 minutes browsing the aisles. I was looking for classics –
long classics. Movies that had staying power – both in terms of story line and playing time. And a little bit of Colin Firth wouldn't hurt, either. Here's what I brought home.
Pride & Prejudice: The obvious choice. Classic? Check. Colin? Check. Cozy? 6 long hours worth of checks.
Sense & Sensibility: At 2.5 hours, it's much shorter, but the combination of Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant is magical.
The Sound of Music: Is this a Christmas movie for you? I remember this as being as much of a holiday-TV mainstay as Frosty and Rudolph, but I'll have to watch it again to see if there's actually anything Christmas-y about it.
Gone With the Wind: I've never seen this, so I guess I should thank my ambitious Christmas gift list for the bonus of an education in American pop culture. And it's over 3 hours long, so it should help me knock a couple hundred metres off my total.
Doctor Zhivago: I'm not much of a one for Russion revolutionaries, but this comes highly recommended. Apparently the scenes of Russian winters are absolutely bone-chilling (which ought to make me happy to be wrapped up and knitting in my overheated apartment!) Do you have any recommendations for me? I'd love to hear them!
