Brush onion with 1 tsp of the oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place onion and bacon on greased grill over medium-high heat; close lid and grill, turning occasionally, until bacon is warmed through, about 4 minutes, and onion is softened, about 7 minutes.Top 4 of the bread slices with Cheddar cheese, bacon, tomato and onion. Sandwich with remaining bread.
Brush both sides of sandwiches with remaining oil. Return to grill over medium heat; grill, covered and turning once, until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
