The Outdoor Oven: Final Instalment

ovenSuccess! Here is the finished oven with all of the layers built. In the end the whole thing was probably two or three days worth of work spaced over four weekends. I hear it gets really hot but I haven't had the opportunity to cook in it yet. Luckily the peel I bought for it fits through the doorway - we were in doubt it would. If you want to try this at home, you might want to measure at least 12 inches for the door to fit a standard peel. Angela made a thick wooden door for the opening which helps to keep the fire burning when you're heating up the oven. It sits slightly ajar so it acts a chimney for the smoke to escape. pizza The fire is not left in the oven, it's removed and the hearth is swept once the bricks and clay have absorbed the heat of the fire. The oven temperature is easily 500 degrees and the pizza is cooked right on the hearth floor. Next year the girls want to add a grill for the coals - I just hope it's not raining!
