The Foodie-file: Deli Lunch

centre-street.gifToday the Canadian Living test kitchen went for a holiday lunch at The Centre Street Deli and had a toast to our holiday break with some good Jewish smoked meat! The deli is a North Toronto institution and serves authentic deli goods from Matzo ball soup with homemade chicken stock, to hand sliced corned beef. Just the selection of mustards alone is the worth the trek to Thornhill! I had what they call a medium old fashioned on rye with a pickle on the side and a bowl of matzo ball soup to start. “Old fashioned” is their spiced corned beef which they make in house and it is served on deli style rye; soft with a chewy crust. The French fries are also excellent which I did not order but I know because I kept picking at Soo’s who was sitting next to me. As I left Adell told me to try a Muhn (moon) cookie. These are barely sweet cracker-like cookies studded with poppy seeds – they look simple but have a strangely addictive quality, which must be why they are always sold out. If you are online tomorrow, come visit me in the forums. I am hosting live and will be answering questions about Christmas dinner, turkey dilemmas and anything else you need to know about holiday entertaining See you there! > Click here to sign up for Christine's Food for Friends e-newsletter!
