The Foodie-file: Big Turk
I was just reading the February issue of Saveur magazine and Canada has received kudos in their top 100 foodie things not once but twice! The first mention goes to the
chefs of Montreal who are admired for their emphasis on great food over hype. I think this also speaks to a population who demand and appreciate great food over a million-dollar front of house. The second kudos goes to goes the
Nestle Canada’s chocolate bar Big Turk. I was thrilled with the entry even through it probably has been 25 years since I had one – I have to admit that as a child I loved The Big Turk.
My Father owned a grocery store and occasionally we would be allowed to choose a treat from the chocolate bar shelf, my choice was always a Big Turk. I thought it was terribly exotic and I loved the flavour of the gooey rosewater centre combined with chocolate. The smell of it was magical as well – I thought that if the colour purple had a smell it would smell like a Big Turk. Occasionally I will get a whiff of that unidentifiable purple smell and it reminds me of childhood pleasures. There is also this guy that I sometimes date that friends of mine have nicknamed after this chocolate bar – so reading Saveur today has put me in mind of all types of pleasures!
