Montreal: 2 must-have sandwiches
I was in Montreal over the weekend for a very short 48 hour trip. My biggest dilemma? Narrowing down my food options given the limited amount of time I had in the city. It you've been to Montreal, you'll know that this is no easy task! I ended up having
two of the best Jewish deli-style sandwiches during my trip. Here goes!
1. Schwartz's Deli: I lived in Montreal for almost 7 years a few years back, so I knew that heading to the most well-known Jewish deli in town was an absolute must.
Nowhere in Canada will you find smoked meat the way Montreal does it! In fact, my schedule was so tight that I took a cab from the airport straight to
Schwartz's, to enjoy a late-night classic smoked meat sandwich (with fatty brisket!). Now that's food dedication! You can order your smoked meat from lean, to medium to fatty but
the fatty meat is the way to go: it's buttery, as tender as can be and deliciously comforting.
2. Hof Kelsten: The newbie in town, run by baker extraordinaire Jeffrey Finkelstein, has built its stellar reputation by
providing bread to some of the most renowned restaurants in Montreal, like
Joe Beef and
Toqué!. You can now purchase the breads for yourself, or sit down for one of the best sandwiches you'll ever sink your teeth into. I ordered
the gravlax sandwich, made with generous slices of smoked (in-house, of course!) salmon, thinly sliced cucumber and a creamy dill spread.
Hof Kelsten is a delicious reminder of what old-school, artisan bread is supposed to taste like.
