Hot and Spicy Food Festival

hot-sauce-lead.jpgThis past weekend I attended the Hot and Spicy food festival at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. In addition to an iron chef type competition with international competitors, live music and dancing exhibitions, there was a market place showcasing local and international hot sauces. Here are some spicy sauces from the show: edna’s picklesEdna's from Edna's Pickles had an array of condiments, both savoury and sweet. Edna's Pickles is based in Mississauga, Ontario and makes various Indian chutneys and relishes. Her chutneys are fruity and flavourful, more spicy with low level heat than burning hot. Even the super spicy mango wasn't killer hot, but delicious nonetheless. I could eat it with a spoon! red pepper sauceHot Mamas is a family-owned and operated Canadian business. Their signature sauce is their red pepper jelly made from a family recipe that has been passed down through generations. The jelly is made with scotch bonnet peppers, so it packs a punch, but it's still nicely balanced with sweetness. They also have an excellent lime pepper sauce that would be really good with fish or shrimp. susie’s hot sauceSusie was here with Susie's Hot Sauce from Antigua, showcasing her super hot island concoctions. She also had many fruit based sauces like pineapple and papaya. chetty’sChetty's BBQ sauce was delicious and not too sweet. Their hot sauces are also great and pack a lot of heat and a lot of flavour. The peppers are grown in South America and the sauce is made in Ontario - a multicultural brew.
