Great Eats #4: Top marks for Foxley

Foxley-Bistro-Bar

When I arrived in Toronto last September, I asked my Canadian Living colleagues for restaurant recommendations. Foxley Bistro and Bar (207 Ossington Ave.) was at the top of many lists. So a couple of weeks ago, I finally made it there for dinner. And I’m so glad I did!

First, the ambiance. The South Asian bistro is located on Ossington’s ultra-trendy strip—it was nice to be in the ’hood. Inside, the room was sparse but warmly lit, encouraging a casual, intimate vibe—great for dinner and conversation. We sat at the bar to chat with the servers and glimpse the magic happening just beyond in the tiny kitchen.

Chef/owner Tom Thai has designed an inspired Asian tapas menu that is ideal for sharing. Ordering five generously portioned dishes between two of us, with the accompanying bottle of red, it was the perfect amount of food and drink. We feasted on the Blue Crab and Avocado Salad, Spicy Crispy Shrimp with Jalapeno and Garlic, Slow Braised Pork Belly, Grilled Hanger Steak and the famous Arctic Char Ceviche. Every dish was expertly prepared and plated, and outrageously delicious. Although we went heavy on the meat for our meal, there were many vegetarian options on the menu too.

Tom is known for his way with flavours, often blending spicy, sweet and salty tastes with different food textures. Every bite was a new flavour sensation, and it made for a surprisingly original meal. That it was also affordable was a pleasant bonus. The price point must be part of the reason why Foxley is always busy, despite a competitive restaurant scene and the fact that they’ve been around for seven years and no longer have new resto buzz. The restaurant doesn’t even have a website—and who needs it when it’s packed to the rafters every night?

One of my Toronto foodie tour highlights to date, Foxley’s great atmosphere, stellar food and fast and friendly service struck all the right notes. I can’t wait to return when summer finally arrives to try the patio and order up the rest of the menu. Want to try your hand at South Asian cuisine?
