Foodie Inspiration: Clarissa Dickson Wright and the Two Fat Ladies
Sadly,
Clarissa Dickson Wright, of the famed BBC TV series
Two Fat Ladies, passed away on Saturday March 15 at the age of 66. Clarissa, along with
Jennifer Paterson (who passed away in 1999 after being diagnosed with cancer), hosted the British cooking series from 1996 to 1999. The show featured the ladies travelling around Britian on their vintage motorcycle and sidecar, and cooking up
traditional fare with bold flavours using classical cooking techniques. The show had a delightful theme song, that the ladies themselves preformed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueNYY-VvXA4 I was a huge fan of the show when it was on. I loved that they were obviously
not chefs, but simply women who loved to cook and enjoy fresh, good, home cooked food. Their prolific use of fat, particularly
butter and
lard, their contagious enthusiasm, and occasional on screen smoking and drinking, made the show entertaining to watch. They clearly loved food. The show wasn't about marketing themselves or raising their public image, it was about preparing the
food they loved. The ladies did not hold back on the
fat and calories in their cooking, as demonstrated by this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-oXtL2U62k Personally, this is a cooking style I can
embace, at least from time to time.
