Every great barbecue sauce is savoury, sweet, hot and sour, and this lip-smacking version is no exception. Best of all, you can make it with common pantry ingredients that you already have in your kitchen. Brush it onto grilled chicken, ribs and any kind of chops.

Method
In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; cook onion, stirring often, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic; cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add paprika; cook, stirring, for 30 seconds.
Stir in strained tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, pepper, salt, ancho chili powder and 1/2 cup water; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 15 to 18 minutes. (Make-ahead: Refrigerate in airtight container for up to 2 weeks.)
Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
Change it up: Smoky Barbecue Sauce
Omit paprika and ancho chili powder. Add 1/4 tsp liquid smoke along with strained tomatoes.
