This is Dalal\u2019s second post in a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/blogs\/life\/2015\/11\/25\/meet-dalal-one-womans-journey-to-a-new-world-of-opportunity\/\" target=\"_blank\">series about activism<\/a><\/strong> for canadianliving.com. <\/em> \n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29925\" src=\"http:\/\/storage.quebecormedia.com\/v1\/cl_prod\/canadian_living\/069f4f19-1561-4518-96f1-20a63ff57b82\/Holiday-travel-620.jpg\" alt=\"Freedom to travel\" width=\"620\" height=\"375\" \/> \n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Photography: Getty Images<\/em><\/p> I haven\u2019t seen my parents in three years and I don't know when they will meet my nine-month-old daughter, Zeina, who is their first grandchild. Of course, we Skype and my mother and father have photos of Zeina, but that is so very different from being together in person. That\u2019s why people wait in jam-packed airports to \n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/blogs\/life\/2010\/10\/29\/5-ways-to-take-the-stress-out-of-holiday-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\">travel to their loved ones during the holiday season<\/a><\/strong>. My parents and siblings \n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/blogs\/life\/2015\/11\/25\/meet-dalal-one-womans-journey-to-a-new-world-of-opportunity\/\" target=\"_blank\">live in the Gaza Strip<\/a><\/strong>. We were forced to move there from Kuwait in 1991 after The Gulf War ended, and there was systemic racism against Palestinians. In 1993, the Oslo Peace Accord was signed, and Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip and West Bank were given Palestinian passports. But still, it was hard to get visas to other countries. I came to Canada for university and now have a dual Palestinian and Canadian passport. When I travel, I am grateful for the simple fact that no one demands to know where I\u2019m going, or why I want to go there, or scrutinizes my paperwork, deciding whether I should have the freedom to move about. That was the situation I regularly faced as a young Palestinian woman living in the Gaza Strip. It was demeaning and infuriating to be denied a basic human right\u2014to be told I couldn\u2019t be free. This holiday season, like thousands of people around the world, I will be spending a lot of time in cramped airport lounges, along with my husband and Zeina, wriggling in our arms. I am flying overseas to my sister\u2019s wedding in Egypt. I am so excited to see her get married, and for Zeina to meet her aunt at last. But I am a bit anxious, too, because I don\u2019t know if my parents will be there. The Rafah Border Crossing is the only place where people can travel between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, and it has been closed for over a year. Only people who have foreign passports or are facing medical emergencies can get from Gaza to Egypt. This is why I haven\u2019t seen my family since my wedding in September 2012, and my mom wasn\u2019t able to come to Canada for Zeina\u2019s birth. When I am travelling over the next couple of weeks, I won\u2019t take my dual Canadian citizenship and my right to travel for granted. I\u2019ll \n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/blogs\/life\/2013\/12\/30\/simple-tips-for-keeping-a-gratitude-journal\/\" target=\"_blank\">count my blessings<\/a><\/strong>, even though I don\u2019t know if I will reunite with my parents and introduce them to Zeina. It\u2019s important to know your rights, to stand up for them and to not take things like health care, education or our freedom to fight for equality for granted. So I will remind myself of what it was like to live in Gaza and not have the right to move about freely and I will hold onto the hope that others, like my parents, will be allowed to travel too. The enterprise offers women the opportunity to earn a reliable income.<\/em><\/p> \n<p class=\"summary entry-summary\" style=\"text-align: left\">My teen years were anything but typical. I entered adolescence living in a place of constant conflict that would never be home. I had to wear a striped school uniform that identified me as a refugee to everyone in the streets of the Gaza Strip. My classes were unexpectedly interrupted with air strikes and power outages, and I had to submit to evening curfews.<\/p> I saw young women in my school\u2014some only 15\u2014married off. Others stayed home to help raise younger siblings and do housework instead of getting an \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/life\/community\/womens_education_rates_around_the_world.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>education<\/strong><\/a>. There certainly weren't any events like \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/life\/community\/we_day_2015_highlights.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>We Day<\/strong><\/a> for me, my two sisters, or other girls to attend. But the experience shaped who I am today: a determined advocate for education, diversity, and women's and children's rights. I was born in Kuwait and my family is Palestinian. When the Gulf War ended in 1991, there was so much hatred towards Palestinians. I was called derogatory names. My parents were educators but they were no longer allowed to teach in public schools. My three siblings and I were banned from public school. \n<p class=\"summary entry-summary\" style=\"text-align: left\">My parents reluctantly moved our family to the Gaza Strip, where they're originally from. So, when I was 12, I went from one place of war to another.<\/p> It was so strange to see so few opportunities for girls and women. Fortunately, my parents were progressive and let me take leadership courses after school at a local YMCA. My joy was leading a kids' discussion group, in which we talked about everything from the food at home to the occupation. Then when I turned 17, a new door opened up. I received a scholarship to go to Norway and study with Red Cross Nordic United World College. I was so nervous about all the changes\u2014a new country, culture, and language\u2014but there I felt free. I was free to study with both men and women, free to meet new people and openly discuss ideas, free to move about without a curfew and free from being stopped and asked where I was going. From there, I came to Canada on another scholarship. At Trent University, I completed a degree in political science and international development. It was an internship at \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freethechildren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Free the Children<\/a> in Toronto that kept me in Canada. At the organization, I was intrigued by all the young women I saw in leadership positions, and youth who were given a voice in helping to solve global problems, like poverty. I knew it was the right place for me. In January 2013, I started in my current role. It's a privilege to make the We Day stage a truly inclusive space that allows people of different genders, ages and race to talk about their perspectives on so many issues, from \n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianliving.com\/life\/community\/me_to_we_winner_carol_todd.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>bullying<\/strong><\/a> and hunger to climate change. In late March, I took on another important role. I am a new mother. My daughter, Zeina, validates why my work is so important \u2013 and why I am in Canada. I know that, here, she won't become one of the hundreds of thousands of girls who doesn't go to school, or dream about opportunities. I know I am helping to create a more just and equal world for Zeina, and other young people.
